Earthworms are often overlooked as a viable food source for your fish and I have no clue as to why. As many of you know, you can get earthworms relatively cheaply at pet stores and fish and tackle stores, but if you have access to a garden, or just a patch of ground that has some soil thing you should be able to collect more than you would need to feed your fish for FREE!!Go outside right after rainy weather or a heavy fog, take a shovel, and plunge it into the ground, and turn it over! You should get plenty of earthworms in that one shovelful:)
You can also bait the ground to get them to come to the surface. If it has not rained or it hasn't been foggy you can always do the following where a sprinkler is going to come on.
- Take two or more pieces of news paper (No colored ink), wet them, and place them in a shaded spot directly on the soil.
- Take some potato peels, cornhusk, or any veggie scraps left over from dinner and place them under the wet pieces of news paper.
- If you have chickens or a rabbit like I do you can take some of their manure and put it under the pieces of news paper. Earthworms love manure!
Now that you baited the ground you can very easily collect earthworms at night
for your fish. Just go outside with a flashlight and pick up the news paper and you will see lots of earthworms daily.
When you do catch your earthworms, put them into a container (that has holes in the lid for ventilation) for a few days. Be sure to put a piece of that news paper along with some damp moss or grass. You want to wait for the earthworms to poop all the soil out so that it doesn't get in your fish tank, and your fish will thank you for it;)
